Preparing students for college and an evolving, technology driven world
Coliseum College Prep Academy, a new school in East Oakland, opened in the fall of 2006. A committed team of parents, teachers, students, and community members has fought for the opportunity to open the first new, small ‘secondary school’ in OUSD. At CCPA, all students develop as learners, thinkers, communicators, and citizens. Our school program will meet each learner’s unique needs, value their passions and interests, connect their learning to the real world, and require students to demonstrate what they know and are able to do. Through partnerships with multiple community groups, we will provide supports to help all students achieve high standards. Technology will be integrated throughout our program to ensure students are ready to compete in our digital world. In our first year, we will open with grades 6 and 7 serving 150 students. CCPA will add a new class of 6th graders each year until we reach capacity: 420 students in grades 6-12. Our founding class is 70% Latino, 21% African-American, and 9% Asian/Pacific Islander. Nearly half of our students (48%) are English Language Learners, and 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. CCPA will be located on the Havenscourt Campus in the shadows of the Coliseum sports complex.
School Program
The central feature of our school program is the opportunity to spend 7 years with students. Students will enter CCPA in Division I (grades 6/7) where they will be oriented to key elements of our school culture and academic program and prepared to tackle the rigorous college prep program of the upper grades. In Division II (grades 8/9/10), students will begin a college prep program with series of active, inquiry based core classes. The program will be focused on meeting the University of California A-G requirements. The Senior Institute (grades 11/12) will support students’ transition to the next phase of their lives by providing concurrent enrollment in local colleges and universities and offering internships in local organizations and businesses. Forging strong relationships between students, teachers, and families over this time will allow us to support students’ growth and development.
Other key elements of our school program include…
• Emphasis on Habits of Mind and Work
• Extended Day to provide intervention and enrichment opportunities
