Welcome to Elmhurst Community Prep, a small middle school in East Oakland founded on four core principles: High Academic Achievement, Collaboration, Family Involvement and Positive School Culture. Students learn and are held accountable for learning the skills and habits needed to excel academically. Every ECP student graduates prepared for success in the college preparatory high school of his or her choice. ECP is a small school, allowing staff to build strong personalized relationships with students and families.

Last year, our school outperformed all other OUSD middle schools when looking at student growth on CST exams over two years. Our four defining principles are:

Collaboration: Inherent to Elmhurst Community Prep is the idea that collaborative relationships are the key to the success of any organization. ECP works hard to make sure that teacher and student collaboration is happening consistently. Students are constantly pushed to talk to each other about their work in classrooms. A walk through our school shows many students talking to each other inside of classrooms about their work. Teacher collaboration is centered on looking at student work, data inquiry and unit planning.

Consistent High Expectations: Academic rigor is the foundation of the middle school program at ECP. Professional Development centers around looking at grade level student work and its relation to expected standards. Teachers work together to implement grade level assessments and to reflect on data from those assessments.

Parent and Community Involvement: Every family is expected to participate and support ECP throughout the year. Parents receive progress reports every week from the school to ensure constant communication. Students take their parents through Student Led Conferences where they exhibit a portfolio of their work three times per year. The school year ends with a school-wide exhibition of student work. The ECP Family Center and its many resources are housed on campus to ensure parents and community members feel welcome and involved at all times.

Positive School Culture: The spirit of positive reinforcement is fundamental to academic and social growth at ECP. Students and teachers show compassion and support in order for ECP students to dream, prepare and achieve their goals. A compassionate and nurturing school culture is built through a comprehensive advisory program for all students, weekly Town Hall meetings, academic competitions, numerous award ceremonies and individualized electives. Our Extended Day serves all students and is bolstered by our award winning Performing Arts program.
