History
EXCEL High School was founded in 2005 to improve the educational experiences and outcomes for students in the McClymonds attendance area. EXCEL's goal is for every student to graduate meeting the A-G requirements and attend a 2 or 4 year university of their choice.

Vision
Our schools with embrace the rich cultural and historical experiences of West Oakland and continue to build a network of graduates who contribute to this community through service and activism. We will provide an environment that value and honors all individuals, our collective histories, and our shared and diverse cultures within a positive school climate marked by high expectations, academic rigor and a relevant curriculum. Students will be empowered to be change agents and critical thinkers with the ability to problem solve and effectively communicate who they are through various forms of expression.

Career Exposure
The Law & Government Academy (LGA) teaches students about the various aspects of law in preparation for careers in pubic service. Through an interactive and student-centered curriculum, field trips, and guest speakers students learn inquiry, research, and critical thinking skills. Students also participate in the Alameda County Mock Trial Competition. LGA also houses the EXCEL Youth Court where students address referrals from staff by "holding court" and issue sentences. LGA students also participate in internships at law offices and other public service agencies.

SMArt Academy (Storytelling through the Media Arts): Through various forms of digital media, students create, communicate, and distribute/share their works. Whether students are aspiring producers, writers, graphic design artists, or filmmakers, the SMArt Academy allows students through their area of interest to "Tell Their Story." SMArt Academy students have an opportunity to enroll in college level media courses and also participate in internships during the summer.
