NEW: Check out Life Academy's website!

Life Academy of Health & Bioscience was opened in the fall of 2001. It is a small, public school, which grew out of a health academy program at a large comprehensive high school. It serves 250 students of diverse backgrounds, in grades 9 through 12, who live in the greater East Oakland community.

Life Academy strives to provide a rigorous and college prep academic experience for its mostly low-income students. The school is committed to providing authentic learning experiences, primarily through project-based learning, field trips, a strong health and bioscience curriculum and an extensive internship program. The staff is also dedicated to providing an effective personalized approach to learning. All students have an Advisory class where a personalized learning portfolio is developed and monitored.

It is the intent of Life Academy that its students become active, lifelong learners and positive participants in their community. To be fully educated and prepared for the 21st century, it is a core belief of the school that students have a strong foundation in literacy mastery, technology, data collection and analysis. The teaching staff works collaboratively to prepare our students for college.

  • Life Academy was granted a rare full term accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, despite its young age in June 2005.
  • Life Academy has raised its API score 200 points in the last three years.
  • Life Academy is being recognized as a “National Model” at the National School Model’s Conference in Florida in June of 2006
  • In a state audit of the school’s English Language Learner program in November of 2004, it was judged to have the most “rigorous overall curriculum of any high school in Oakland”.

Our students are going to some of the best colleges and universities in the country. We have graduates at Smith College, Pomona College, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Mills College and many more.

Won’t you help us continue our mission to provide a first rate high school education to the youth of Oakland?
